In an impressive display of teamwork and camaraderie, volunteers recently gathered at Horton Woods for the September Work/Walk Party organized by Saco Bay Trails.
The ambitious project, which took place on September 9th, involved constructing a bridge along the scenic Blue Heron Trail.
Preparations began the night before as the team transported necessary lumber along the trail. With the materials in place for the morning, volunteers wasted no time assembling the bridge, working diligently to ensure its completion.
Ryan Gorman, President of Saco Bay Trails, mentioned that determining the ideal location for the bridge was a challenge.
Previously, the Blue Heron Trail had a steep ascent onto a neighboring private property, which graciously allowed public use.
To offer a more picturesque and enjoyable walking experience, the decision was made to reroute the trail.
Wyatt Williams, a member of Troop 310 of Saco, undertook the task of cutting the trail as part of his Eagle Scout Project, making this transformation possible.
Under the guidance of John Riordan, a dedicated board member and retired engineer who designed the bridge, a group of 15 to 16 volunteers began construction. Board by board, they built a sturdy bridge to enhance the trail experience in Horton Woods.
Ryan mentioned that everyone present, including board members, contributes their time and expertise voluntarily. This ensures that all donations received directly support trail maintenance and improvement.
The significance of accessible trails, especially during the challenging times brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, cannot be overstated. Ryan understands this firsthand due to his involvement in scouting during his childhood and his recognition of the importance of outdoor spaces.
