In the quaint and picturesque city of Saco, there exists a timeless treasure nestled along a stretch of Buxton Road.
Even though it’s been well over a century, the Way Way Store still stands proudly, its entrance guarded by robust pillars of concrete, inlaid with a mosaic of stones.
Step inside, and you'll be enveloped by an enchanting atmosphere where nostalgia permeates every corner. The aged wooden floors creak softly, whispering stories of time gone by under the shuffling feet of those who wander through its historical doors.
In a glass case by the registers, a kaleidoscope of confectionaries can be found. Toward the back of the store, shelves are lined with large glass jars brimming with sweets of all kinds, from the chewy delights of saltwater taffy and rainbow-hued Skittles to the timeless favorites like Bit-O-Honey, Jaw Busters and more.
In harmony with the candy array, the walls are also adorned with an eclectic mix of antiques: vintage boxing gloves, assorted license plates, cans of Humpty Dumpty potato chips, and intricately detailed miniature cars. Truly, the Way Way Store offers a trove of wonders.
At the heart of this sweet emporium is Peter Scontras, a keeper of confections and a curator of childhood memories. His eyes twinkle with amusement, much like the jars of vibrant candy that line shelf after shelf. He loves showing off the unique historical treasures that lay hidden within, and chatting with curious visitors who come in asking about the antiques and the store’s history.
Originally established as a combination general store and gas station, the establishment shuttered its doors in 2003, only to be rekindled into life in 2011 by Peter and his wife, Bridget—a pair of retired educators with a vision.
As the second proprietor of the location in its history, Peter works hard to keep the integrity of the building’s original look in good standing. Together, he and Bridget breathe life into this delightful nook, ensuring that the Way Way Store continues to be a beacon of reminiscence and joy for generations to come.
